Garage Door Spring Replacement in Los Angeles
A broken garage door spring is the most common reason a garage door suddenly stops working. PLL Garage Doors and Gates replaces torsion and extension springs for homes and businesses across Los Angeles, Ventura and Orange County, with 24/7 emergency service when your car is stuck inside.
Our technicians come out with a stocked truck and are trained to finish most spring replacements in a single visit. We match new springs to your door’s weight and size, then balance and safety-test the door before we leave.
We stand behind our work: spring replacements are backed by a warranty. Ask us about the coverage for your job.

Signs Your Garage Door Spring Is Broken
- A loud bang from the garage, often when nobody is using the door
- A visible gap in the torsion spring above the door
- The opener runs but the door lifts only a few inches, or not at all
- The door feels very heavy, or drops fast when closing
- Loose cables, or the door sitting crooked in its opening
If you notice any of these, stop using the opener and do not try to lift the door by hand. A garage door is heavy and its springs are under high tension. Call us and we will tell you how to keep things safe until a technician arrives. More warning signs: 5 common signs of a broken garage door spring.
Torsion Springs vs. Extension Springs
Torsion Springs
Torsion springs sit on a steel shaft above the door opening and wind up as the door closes. Most newer two-car doors use them. They give smoother, more controlled movement, and when one breaks the door usually stays down.
Extension Springs
Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on each side and stretch as the door closes. They are common on older and lighter doors. They should always have safety cables running through them so a broken spring cannot whip loose. If yours do not, ask us about adding them.
How We Replace Garage Door Springs
- Inspect and measure. We check the door’s size and weight and the spring’s wire size and length, along with cables, drums, rollers and bearings.
- Install matched springs. New springs are sized to your door, so the door is balanced and the opener is not overworked.
- Balance and adjust. We set the spring tension so the door stays in place when lifted halfway by hand.
- Safety test. We test the auto-reverse, photo-eye sensors and opener force settings before we leave.
On doors with two springs we usually recommend replacing both at once. They were installed together, have gone through the same number of cycles, and the second one is often close to failing. We explain the options and the price before any work starts.
Can I Replace a Garage Door Spring Myself?
We do not recommend it. Winding or unwinding a torsion spring takes proper tools and training, and a slip can cause serious injury. What you can safely do: keep the door closed, unplug the opener, and keep people and pets away from the door until it is repaired. Garage Door Spring FAQs
How long do garage door springs last?
Springs are rated in cycles, where one cycle is one opening and one closing. Standard springs are commonly rated around 10,000 cycles, which for a door used a few times a day works out to several years. Higher-cycle springs are available for doors that get heavy use.
Why did my spring break?
Usually it is metal fatigue from years of use. Rust, lack of lubrication and a door that is out of balance can shorten spring life.
Can I use my garage door with a broken spring?
No. Running the opener with a broken spring can damage the opener and the door, and the door can drop suddenly. Leave it closed and call us.
Do you offer emergency spring replacement?
Yes. Along with our regular hours (Mon to Thu 7am to 10pm, Fri 7am to 6pm, Sat 9am to 10pm, Sun 7am to 10pm), we take emergency calls 24/7.
